Anson fell short in its first scrimmage of the season against Cheraw High School, 7-0.
The kickoff for football season throughout the region often begins with what some call scrimmages, or a jamboree.
Several of these events were held last Saturday at the Cheraw High School football stadium in Cheraw, S.C.
The first three games were Timmonsville vs. Central Eagles; McBee Panthers vs. South Stanley; and Chesterfield Rams vs. Marion. The final scrimmage was between the stadium hosts, the Cheraw Braves, and the Anson Bearcats.

McBee vs. Stanley
0-14 (Stanley)
Chesterfield vs. Marion
21 - 14 (Chesterfield)
Cheraw vs. Anson
0-7 (Cheraw)
Anson head coach Luke Hyatt said he thought the final game went “okay.”
“We lost one touchdown,” Hyatt said. “Cheraw scored on a turnover. Our defense was pretty outstanding. Offensively, we turned the ball over. Melek Coleman had an interception. That was a pretty big surprise for us. Good things to see from us.”
Prior to the first scrimmage, the coach said he wanted to cut down on turnovers this season. The Bearcats will have to continue to work on this crucial facet of the game, which Hyatt has described as the difference between victory and defeat. Anson will get another chance Friday at Forest Hills High School in an endowment game at 7:30 p.m.
