Anson High School has a new basketball coach.

Brandon Rains started two weeks ago. A former basketball player at Pfeiffer University, he has been an assistant coach at Porter Ridge for one year and Parkwood for the last five. He was born and raised in Monroe and recently obtained his master’s degree in physical education from Wingate University. He will teach the subject at Anson, in addition to his duties as basketball coach.

He has spent some time in the gym with as many as 30 hopeful players this summer but full practices and workouts are not expected to start until Sept. 1.

Rains has a plan. “We definitely want to adapt [offensively],” he said. “We definitely want to play up-tempo basketball.” He hopes to train the team to read defenses and react.

He has the same philosophy for defense. He plans on running multiple defenses to “apply pressure on our opponents.”

While a full roster is not even set, he has praise for the hopefuls that have come to the gym. “We have some young guys, extremely hard workers,” he said. He has eight players that he expects to be part of the team with four open slots.

“I’m blessed to be part of the community,” he said. “I’ve seen some great things going on in Anson. I’m looking forward to the season and working with these young men.”
