A group of cyclists honoring fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers came through Anson County Wednesday morning as part of a nearly 400-mile trip from Wilmington to Asheville.
“The Carolina Brotherhood will be an annual cycling event made up of firefighters and police officers from the Carolinas,” according to the group’s website. “We will ride in the name of our fallen brothers and sisters from the Carolinas.”
The 2012 ride is dedicated to the memory of Captain Jeffery Bowen of the Asheville Fire Department, who died last year while working at a commercial structure fire. Bowen is survived by his mother, wife and three children. All proceeds raised from the ride will go to the Bowen family.
The ride started in Wilmington on Monday and is planned to end Friday in Asheville, with overnight stays in Elizabethtown, Rockingham, Charlotte and Forest City, before ending in Asheville. The cyclists plan to ride 75 miles a day.
The cyclists came down U.S. 74 and Morven Road in Wadesboro at around 9 a.m. Wednesday on Day 3 of their journey, and made a brief stop at the Anson Rescue Squad on Morgan Street.
On Day 2, the cyclists made a detour through Lumberton to pay tribute at the funeral for slain Police Officer Jeremiah Montgomery of the Lumberton Police Department. Officer Montgomery was gunned down on July17 while serving a warrant. The team also stopped at the memorial site of a fire that took place in Hamlet on Sept. 3, 1991. “Hamlet Fire Dept assistant Chief Calvin White, who was first on scene, shared with the members what took place on that difficult day when 25 lives were taken by a horrific fire,” Captain Rob Brisley, a member of the Carolina Brotherhood. “More importantly, Chief White spoke about what it means to be a firefighter in any community across our country.”
“The 30 riders’ wish to acknowledge the incredible support this committed ride has received from every community along the way,” Brisley added.
