Wadesboro — Kongpeng Lor of Anson County Early College attended the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., June 16-22.
Sponsored by Pee Dee Electric Membership Corporation (Pee Dee EMC), Kongpeng visited monuments, the Smithsonian Museums, and met with representatives in the U.S. House and Senate. Kongpeng is the son of Nhia and Chong Lor and was among 1,500 students from across the nation to attend the Youth Tour.
The all-expenses paid trip educates youth on issues in the energy industry, provides an opportunity for the students to become familiar with the historical and political environment of the nation’s capitol, and also allows them to meet elected officials. The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has been a joint effort of local electric cooperatives, the statewide associations and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) based in Arlington, Va.
“We were privileged to sponsor Kongpeng at the National Electric Cooperative Youth Tour,” said Anne Edwards, marketing representative of Pee Dee EMC. “We knew he was the right candidate to represent Pee Dee EMC on the tour after reviewing his outstanding application.”
Since 1964, the nation’s cooperative electric utilities have sent more than 50,000 high school juniors and seniors on this week-long trip. NRECA is the national service organization representing the nation’s more than 900 consumer-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperatives, which provide electric service to 42 million people in 47 states.
