After the General Assembly voted to pass a budget over Governor Bev Perdue’s veto, the Anson County Board of Education may move toward passing a permanent 2012-2013 budget.
“We will come back either in July or August to approve,” Superintendent Greg Firn said. “We take that now that that’s finalized and look and see what that means.”
“They’ve approved a local spending plan,” he said. “They will now approve the state spending plan.”
While the budget does contain cuts in funding from last year, these cuts are not as deep as previously expected, according to Firn. “It is definitely going to [have an] impact.”
He said the restoration of some of this funding would also help mitigate the impact of some federal funding that will expire in the fall.
The board will examine more specific figures later. On June 28, the school board approved interim funding at 50 percent of 2011-2012 levels until a budget was passed.
The budget is not the only significant item on the board’s plate. With the departure of school board member Rob Rollins, there is a vacancy to fill. Previously, the board has voted by ballot for replacements.
“We have not even discussed it yet,” board chairwoman Lisa Davis said. Rollins resigned at the June 28 meeting because he has received a new parish assignment outside of Anson.
Davis said that a special meeting has not been scheduled for a discussion or vote. The next regular meeting of the school board is July 30.
