Andy Griffith has died.
He was 86.
According to WAVY-TV in Dare County, Griffith’s home, emergency medical services were called to his Highway 64 home in Roanoke Island shortly after 7 a.m. this morning.
Bill Friday, former president of the University of North Carolina and friend to the Griffith family, confirmed the actor’s death to WITN-TV Tuesday morning.
Griffith was born in Mount Airy and went on to fame starring as Sheriff Andy Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1960 to 1968. Griffith also starred in another TV favorite, “Matlock,” playing cantankerous defense lawyer Ben Matlock, who had a knack for getting juries to acquit and witnesses to confess on the stand.
