After several straight months of steady decline, Anson County’s unemployment rate for the month of May increased 1.2 percent. The county’s unemployment rate for May was 11.7 percent, up from 10.5 percent in April.
The 11.7-percent unemployment rate in Anson County means that of the county’s 10,998-strong workforce, 1,289 received unemployment benefits last month.
Anson was one of 76 North Carolina counties that experienced an increase in unemployment in May, according to a report released by the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Labor and Economic Analysis Division on Friday. Unemployment decreased in 21 counties and remained the same in three.
“While rates were up in most counties for May, over-the-year, we see a positive downward trend,” said N.C. Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Dale Carroll. “Rates were down in 88 counties across North Carolina since May of last year. Our focus remains on growing jobs across the state as several key job announcements have been made over the past several weeks. Our employment service offices are committed to working with employers to get job seekers back to work in North Carolina.”
North Carolina’s statewide unemployment rate was 9.4 percent in May. This was a 0.3 of a percentage-point increase from April’s revised rate of 9.1 percent, and a 0.9 percentage-point decrease over the year.
At the county level, Currituck County had the state’s lowest unemployment rate in May at 5.2 percent, and Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate at 16.9 percent.
Anson’s neighboring counties had varying fluctuations in May. Richmond’s rate decreased slightly from 12.6 percent in April to 12.3 percent in May, while Stanly’s unemployment increased from 9.5 percent to 9.7, and Union County’s rate increased from 7.7 percent in April to 8.0 percent in May.
The next unemployment report will come on July 20, when the state unemployment rate will be released.
