Anson County’s cancer survivors were honored as part of the annual Relay for Life held June 15 at the Anson High School athletic stadium.
After an invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance and a rousing rendition of the National Anthem to start the Relay’s opening ceremony, cancer survivors took the first lap around the track, stating their name and how many years they have been cancer-free. Those participating in the Relay have survived cancer for as little as four months and as long as several decades.
On the second lap of the Relay, caregivers joined in.
A total of 24 teams participated in this year’s Relay for Life, raising a total of $22,200, as of press time.
Teams participating included survivors and their families, as well as teams from local organizations like the Department of Social Services, the Anson Rescue Squad and for the first time, a team from Pee Dee Electric.
