RALEIGH — North Carolina’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, at 9.4 percent, showed no change in May, while the number of persons unemployed decreased by 3,675 to 435,908.
“Over the past two years, North Carolina has gained 71,200 private sector jobs,” said N.C. Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Dale Carroll. “Together with our workforce partners and employment service offices across the state, we are committed to helping employers put people back to work in North Carolina.”
Seasonally adjusted total nonfarm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, decreased by 16,500 to 3,939,000 in May. The major industry with the largest over-the-month increase was trade, transportation & utilities, which gained 1,900.
Since May 2011, total nonfarm jobs gained 11,500 with the majority of the increase coming from the service providing sector (19,000). The largest over-the-year increase of major industries was also in trade, transportation & utilities at 9,600, followed by education & health services, 7,400.
The number of people employed (smoothed seasonally adjusted) decreased by 5,803 to 4,223,904 over the month, but increased by 61,494 over the year. The state unemployment rate in May 2011 was 10.5 percent.
The next unemployment update is scheduled for June 22, when the county unemployment rates for May 2012 will be released.
