Dr. Bobbie J. Little, native of Lilesville, received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award from North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue on March 10 during the National Association of University Women Founder’s Day Event hosted by the Raleigh Branch in Raleigh.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is among the most prestigious awards presented by the governor of North Carolina. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is presented to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state. Contributions to their communities, extra effort in their careers, and many years of service to their organizations are some of the guidelines by which recipients are selected for this award.

“I am thankful and humbled by the presentation of this award,” Dr. Little said. “It serves as a reminder of what I truly believe about service; we are blessed to be blessings to others. The award also reminds me of the many years that I have done what I am most passionate about, which is helping others, especially children.”

Dr. Little has always put forth extra effort in her career and by the many years of service she has given to organizations to which she belong, including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., National Association of University Women, and others. Dr. Little serves on the Children’s Ministry Board at her church. She has received numerous awards for service on the local, state, and national levels including the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service. Dr. Little is a strong advocate for excellence in education. She earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from UNC-Pembroke and her Education Specialist and Doctor of Education degrees from UNC-Charlotte. She also earned credits from UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC-Greensboro.

Proud of her humble beginnings in education, Dr. Little compassionately shares that she began her career in Anson County as a bus driver and teacher assistant, and continued to move through the realms to do almost everything there is to do as an educational leader in public schools in North Carolina.

She presently serves as vice chairman of the Anson County School Board.

Compelled by her compassion for education, Dr. Little now serves as professor in the School of Education and Field Placement Coordinator at Shaw University in Raleigh.
