The shooting occurred at approximately 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon, according to a press release from Wadesboro Police Chief Janie Schutz.
Though the details of what happened are still being investigated, the chief said in a statement that it appears the incident began with a physical altercation between two men on Salisbury Street. "This altercation was observed by several witnesses," Chief Schutz said. "At some point the fight turned deadly when one or both subjects armed themselves with guns. Numerous shots were fired, leaving one subject shot on the ground."
The victim has been identified as Lawrence Thompson Jr., 31, with a last known address on Salisbury Street. He was transported to Anson County Hospital and quickly airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The Wadesboro Police Department was notified that Thompson passed away at approximately 1:20 a.m. Monday morning.
Michael Dale Liles, 20, is in custody and was initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
"With the death of Mr. Thompson, those charges are expected to be upgraded to first degree murder," Chief Schutz said. "The police department is still seeking another person of interest."
The police department had cordoned off a residence and old church on Salisbury Street at the corner of Wayne Street on Monday.
Schutz said this is "still a very active investigation," and the Wadesboro Police Department is working with agents from the SBI to continue to piece together the details of what exactly happened.
