WADESBORO— Landon A. Scarborough, 89, peacefully passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 in the Heritage Hills Living Center.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church, Wadesboro, with Dr. Robert Hunter and Rev. Warner Bumgardner officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at the church in the ladies parlor prior to the service beginning at 2 p.m. and other times at his home at 812 Wildwood St.

Mr. Scarborough was born Dec. 4, 1921 in Montgomery County, a son of the late Oscar and Binnie Ballard Scarborough. He graduated at the top of his class at Mt. Gilead High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. In 1944, Mr. Scarborough met and married Lois Pope. He played semi-pro baseball in Wadesboro and later served as president of the Anson County Babe Ruth Baseball League for many years. He owned and operated the Scarborough Hardware Company for 56 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and served as a deacon for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lois Pope Scarborough of the home; two sons, Al Scarborough of Polkton and Don Scarborough of Polkton; four grandchildren, Nolan Scarborough, Kent Scarborough, Whitney Scarborough and Logan Scarborough; and two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Casey Scarborough.

Also surviving is a brother and sister, Herman James Scarborough of Campobello, S.C., and Mary Scarborough Gaddy Ratliff of Wadesboro. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Dewey, Ray, Buren and Steve Scarborough.
