The varsity Lady Bearcats continued their winning streak while the JV team had their first loss of the season when both teams faced South Stanly last Wednesday.
The game was a tense one. The varsity girls played four sets. Anson won the first set 25-15, but lost the second set 25-7.
In the third set, the girls made a close comeback with 25-21. The fourth set was even closer. Although Anson was several points ahead near the end of the game, South Stanly nearly caught up at the end. The Bearcats pulled through, taking the set with a close 25-22 and winning the match 3-1.
Coach Celeste Dutton said she was proud of the team. She attributed the loss of the second set to a minor case of cockiness. “I don’t know if they started getting confident and just made a lot of errors,” she said. “I think the girls got really excited and started playing careless and scrappy instead of playing smart.”
The team improved its game, giving them a 5-0 season.
JV
The JV team experienced its first loss this season in another close game against South Stanly.
Anson lost the first set 25-18, but won the second set 25-14. They lost the final set 25-19.
Dutton said there were a few factors that played into the loss. “In the very first game, we moved people around, and I think they weren’t comfortable with that yet,” she said. “We won the second game, and in the third game I don’t know what happened. They just made a lot of bad plays — just a lot of errors in the third game.”
Both teams will travel to Richmond today, with the JV game starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity team at 6:30 p.m. Last time, the JV team won their game and the varsity team did, as well, after a hard five-set contest.
After facing Richmond, the girls will travel to Marvin Ridge next Tuesday to play at 4:30 and 6 p.m.
