The Bearcats lost a home game to the Marvin Ridge Mavericks last week and are preparing for a game against Sun Valley this week.

The 36-22 loss at home hurt the Bearcats.

“Just mistakes,” Coach Ralph Jackson said. “The guys came out and played a lot harder in the second half. We just have to learn to finish.”

The Mavericks made the first touchdown and PAT in the first quarter. They made the next ones with 8:35 left in the second quarter, then again with 0:24 left, putting the halftime score at 0-17. The Bearcats’ Octavion Harrell (#14) made Anson’s first touchdown with 8:10 left in the third quarter; with a PAT, that brought the score to 7-17.

The Bearcats continued to pull ahead when Tavion Rorie (#3) made a touchdown with 4:45 left in the third quarter. When the team made a PAT, the score moved to 14-17, but the Mavericks made another touchdown with just 0:13 left in the third quarter, moving the score to 14-24 in Marvin Ridge’s favor. Harrell made another touchdown with two seconds left, bringing the score to 22-24.

The Mavericks bumped the score to 22-26 in the fourth quarter with 7:07 left in the game, then again to 22-29 with 3:54 left. Marvin Ridge made another touchdown and PAT just seconds later, giving the Mavericks the win with 22-36.

Jackson said that he asked the team to “step up” in the first half of the game. While there was some tension from an individual, Jackson said it wasn’t the whole team that was affected and that his team was able to play well later in the game.

“We did a great job, we just didn’t finish it,” Jackson said.

The Bearcats will travel to Sun Valley High School to face the Spartans this Friday.

“That’s another high-power offense,” Jackson said. “This is a tough conference to play in.”
