Anson County Parks and Recreation will hold registration for youth tackle football for children in grades 3-4 and 5-6. If enough children in those grades register, the county will host its own league. In the event that there are only enough players for one team, the team will abide by the following rules. A player is eligible to compete in Division 1 if he or she did not turn 8 years old on or before Nov. 1, 2015 and does not turn 10 on or before May 1, 2016. Players are eligible to compete in Division 2 if they turned 10 on or before Nov. 1, 2015 and do not turn 12 on or before May 1, 2016. The cost is $30 per person. A copy of a sports physical and a birth certificate are also due by the deadline. Registration will be held at the Parks and Rec office and at county schools on select dates. Job seekers in Union and Anson counties will have the chance to meet dozens of area employers at the upcoming Career Day (formerly the Ready to Work Expo) from 5-8 p.m. The event will take place at the Union County Agricultural and Conference Center and is sponsored by South Piedmont Community College, the Centralina Workforce Development Board, the Union County Chamber of Commerce and Union County Public Schools. There will be several area employers, including Greiner Bio-One, ATI Specialty Materials, Charlotte Pip and Foundry and 40 more at the event, as well as informative seminars and opportunities to explore South Piedmont Community College programs. The Low Income Energy Assistance Program gives families a one-time vendor payment to help pay their heating bills. Families must meet all of the following: an income test, be responsible for its heating bills and include a U.S. citizen or an eligible alien. To apply for the program, the following information is needed: name, date of birth and Social Security numbers for each household member; household’s income; savings and checking accounts; and property, stocks, bonds and other assets. Applications will be taken for disabled individuals receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services or households containing a person age 60 and above from Dec. 1 through Dec. 31 or until funds are exhausted. Applications on all other households will be taken from Jan. 1 through March 31 or until funds are exhausted. Free income tax assistance will be available for Anson County residents 60 and older of low or moderate income who need help in preparing their income tax returns. This will be offered through a program sponsored by AARP and Grace Senior Center. Volunteer counselors trained in cooperation with the IRS will be at Grace Senior Center. The free assistance is designed to help taxpayers fill out forms 1040EZ, 1040A, 1040 and the North Carolina return. Those using the service should bring the tax aide this year’s tax package, age and earning statements (forms W-2) received from employers, interest statements from banks (form 1099-INT), a copy of last year’s tax return and any other relevant information concerning income and expenses. Grace Senior Center is sponsoring a one-day trip to Lumberton for $60. The price includes shopping and a visit to Biggs Mall and a buffet dinner at Fuller’s Old Fashioned Barbecue Restaurant. Woodmen Life, Wadesboro Chapter 4, a fraternal life insurance society, will accept applications for college scholarships until May 12. The scholarship committee will award $500 scholarships to two Class of 2016 graduates in the Anson County schools. Academic achievement and financial need will be considered, as will fraternal, social and patriotic activities. Seniors can get a Woodmen Life scholarships application form through their school guidance counselors. It should be completed and returned to the counselor by May 12. Awards will be presented at the high school awards ceremony.

South Piedmont Community College will hold several summer camp courses this year. These day camp courses are educational ways to keep teenagers engaged throughout the summer. SPCC staff and faculty will help students to learn more about the programs the school offers in Union and Anson counties. This year, SPCC will offer the following camps at the Monroe, Polkton and Waxhaw locations: Arts, Health/EMT, Cyber Camp, Solar and Energy, Intro to Auto Mechanics, Construction Trades, Advanced Manufacturing, Leadership Camp and others. Connections Family Support Program hosts a monthly family support group open to parents, grandparents and foster parents. This is a time for those with children who have behavioral, emotional and/or learning challenges to share their experiences and learn from others. Greene St., Wadesboro. An interactive reader will share books, sing songs and foster a love for reading through activities appropriate for young learners.
