Anson’s varsity volleyball team won two of its three home games last week.

The girls faced Forest Hills on Monday, winning all three sets 25-8, 25-10, and 25-8, respectively, for a 3-0 win.

The JV team didn’t play against Forest Hills.

On Tuesday, the girls beat Sun Valley with a narrow 3-2. Anson won the first set 26-24 and the second set 25-15. The Lady Bearcats lost the next two sets 25-19 and 28-26, winning the fifth set 15-8 for a 3-2 game win.

The JV team won their game against Sun Valley with a decisive 2-0.

Cuthbertson

Both the JV and varsity volleyball teams lost home games to Cuthbertson last Thursday.

In the varsity game on Thursday, Cuthbertson took the first set 25-22. Anson won the next one 25-20.

Things went downhill for Anson in the third set, when they lost 25-20. The game was lost when Cuthbertson took the final set 25-12.

The JV game went no better for Anson, with Cuthbertson taking both sets 25-13 and 25-17.

Although some of the sets were close, Anson just couldn’t top Cuthbertson. “It’s like we couldn’t get the momentum going,” coach Patty Livinston said.

Co-coach Celeste Dutton added, “Once we got the momentum, we couldn’t keep it.”

Livingston said that the girls may’ve been tired after playing two other home games last week before facing Cuthbertson.

Although the coaches agreed that the girls communicated more in this game than in some recent games, the team just couldn’t maintain its intensity, Livingston said.

The Anson coaches declined to name any MVPs.

Cuthbertson coach Katie Montoya said that Anson is a tough opponent. “It was a really good game,” she said. “Anson is a very scrappy team, they don’t give up on anything, so they defeinitely make you earn every point. So it was a close game there. I think it just came into we’ve been working really hard keeping our stamina up so we can come into these later matches and I think that really paid off for us today.

Montoya named sophomore Mariel Nash as a game MVP. “She played once this whole game and we never question her heart,” she said. “She gives it her all.”

The coach also praised Kayla Famolari for some good blocks during the game. Shay Linderan, senior captain was also a stellar player. “She’s very solid,” Montoya said. “She always finds a way to make the play. She’s always just a very consistent leader out there, and today was no different.”

Montoya was happy with the game overall. “This is why we play, we like good competition,” she said. “This is exactly what we like to do.”

Both JV and varsity will play at Piedmont High School at 4:30 and 6 p.m. on Thursday.
