This year’s Farm-City Week Banquet drew at least 200 people for the dinner and program, which included awards and a stand-up show by motivational comedian David Ferrell.
Banquet workers said 205 people registered for the event, which included a beef dinner catered by the Anson County Cattlemen’s Association. As attendees finished eating, Eloise Harrington, the Anson Advisory Council chair, welcomed guests and gave an invocation. After announcements and recognition of guests and the event sponsor, Pee Dee Electric Membership Corporation, awards were given to deserving local farmers.
Agricultural Extension Agent Jessica Anderson recognized this year’s Outstanding Farmer, Roddy Purser. In addition to receiving a plaque, Purser’s name was added to the list of farmers who have received the award for the past 25 years; the list hangs in the foyer of the Cooperative Extension lobby.
Lynn Edwards, the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, recognized Steve Waddell of Waddell Farms for having the 2012 Outstanding Agribusiness of the Year.
Nicole Carpenter, the supervisor for the Brown Creek Soil and Water Conservation District (BCSWCD) Board, awarded Travis and Kristie Goodwin, and their 1 1/2 year-old son Landis, of Big Rock Farm in Lilesville, a plaque for being the 2012 Anson County Conservation Farm Family of the Year.
Kayla Jones, a junior at Anson New Technology School, was also recognized by Carpenter as being a Resource Conservation Workshop participant. The student who attends the workshop is chosen by the Brown Creek Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors; additionally, the board pays for the student to attend, according to Tina Rowell, the district administrator for BCSWCD.
The entertainment of the evening was Ferrell, a motivational comedian from Raleigh who performed his stand-up show “Positively Funny.” Nominated for Inspirational Comedian of the Year three times, Ferrell, armed with dollar store props, kept the crowd laughing, often calling for audience participation.
The banquet was the beginning of a week highlighting agriculture in Anson County. Other events include the 2012 Anson Ag Expo and Fair on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22. The event includes the South Atlantic Woodsmen’s Association Lumberjack Sports Competition, County Fair, 4-H Youth Livestock Show, Kiddie Tractor Pull, Youth Scavenger Hunt, Creative Squash Challenge, Local Foods Bake-Off, Educational Exhibits, Scarecrow Competition, and other activities and events.
