Polkton has a new police chief. Matthew L. Norris has been hired as the new chief of police in Polkton, and was sworn in Wednesday night.
Norris began his law enforcement career with the North Carolina Department Corrections, specifically Brown Creek Correctional Institution, where he served as a correctional officer for three years. From there, Norris became a deputy sheriff with the Richmond County Sheriffs Office, where he worked for 10 years, as a K-9 handler and drug interdiction officer. Chief Norris left the Richmond County Sheriffs Office to work as for a private security firm in Afghanistan, where he trained Afghans how to become police officers. After a successful mission in Afghanistan, Chief Norris came back to the States and returned to work as a police officer for the Wadesboro and Lilesville Police Departments.
While working at Wadesboro Police Department, Chief Norris implemented and ran the current K-9 program for the department. During Chief Norris’ tenure at the Lilesville Police Department, he obtained the rank of sergeant. Chief Norris has obtained many certifications while being employed as a law enforcement officer, most recently a 250-hour class on “Executive Management” through Richmond Community College in Rockingham.
Chief Norris has recently moved to the Polkton area and is engaged to marry his “best friend,” Jennifer Horne, in April of 2013. Chief Norris is a proud parent of two boys: Christopher, 17, and Bryan, 10.
