The Ansonia Theatre was a magical place on Thursday night, May 10, as magician/comedian The Great Kaplan entertained a crowd including kids and adults of all ages.
Anson County Arts Council secretary/treasurer Catherine Crandell introduced the Great Kaplan, whose name is actually David Kaplan. According to his biography on his website, Kaplan was “inspired by the antics of Keaton, Sellers, Victor Borge, the Smothers Brothers and the illustrious Wile E. Coyote among others.”
He “has thrilled audiences internationally,” Crandell said, and has appeared on ABC’s “The View” and “The Statler Brothers Show” on TNN.
Kaplan kept the audience at the Ansonia amazed with his juggling and sleight of hand skills, and kept them laughing, too, with his well-timed tricks that didn’t quite pan out, causing him to occasionally change his sign from “The Great Kaplan” to “The Above Average Kaplan” or even to “The Sub-Standard Kaplan.”
It was an interactive show as well, with Kaplan bringing kids and adults onstage to help him juggle or to perform other magic tricks, such as a fuzzy ball that was supposed to disappear but instead grew in size the more Kaplan tried to make it disappear. An ongoing bit in which a bowling ball turned into a balloon and floated up to the ceiling of the theatre also kept the kids in stitches.
Overall, it was a night of fun, magic and laughs that those in attendance will not soon forget.
