The Anson County Democratic executive committee is closer to filling the vacant County Commission seat for District 2 (Lilesville), which was left vacant when Commissioner Claude Spencer passed away last month.
The committee has received five resumes for the position — Stephen Lear, William “Billy” Lee, Robert J. Smith, Dannie M. Montgomery and Vancine Robinson Sturdivant.
All five candidates attended the Democratic Party Convention on Saturday, April 14, and members of the executive committee are expected to vote on the replacement at the regularly scheduled monthly Democratic Party meeting on Thursday, April 19, at 6 p.m.
The Democratic executive committee will submit the name of its choice to the county commissioners, but the Commission is under no obligation to accept that choice. The Commission has 60 days to name a replacement. If no selection is made, Clerk of Court Mark Hammond will have 10 days to choose the replacement.
Anyone selected by the Commission will fill the seat until November, when the choices of the Democratic and Republican executive committees will be on the ballot, along with the choice of the county commissioners.
The winner of the election will serve until 2014, when Spencer’s term would have ended.
