Organizers and sponsors of the 2012 Anson County Toys for Tots campaign gathered Tuesday evening to help get this year’s toy drive off to a positive start.
The offices for Toys for Tots will be located at 204 E. Wade St. in uptown Wadesboro. Anson County’s Toys for Tots coordinator Vancine Sturdivant said that attorney Robert Little is allowing the organization to use the office rent-free through the holiday season.
“This is a glorious time in Anson County,” Sturdivant said.
Weaver Thomas welcomed volunteers and sponsor to Toys for Tots’ grand opening in its new offices. “It is really good when I look around and see this room full of people,” he said. “When you think about memories from childhood, especially in the month of December, you always think of Christmas morning. That’s why we’re here.”
He went on to explain that the U.S. Marine Corps has provided toys for needy children throughout the United States since 1947. “There are children who will have something on Christmas morning, thanks to your hard work,” Thomas said.
Officer Landric Reid with the N.C. Highway Patrol also spoke during the grand opening. “Our local mission is to bring the joy of Christmas to children and give hope to others,” he said.
Reid added that he’d watched a Toys for Tots DVD that showed two children who had no presents under their tree on Christmas morning, but then, there was a knock at the door and when the children went downstairs, their tree was full of presents. The DVD then cut to two Marines leaving the children’s house. “That’s what we’re all about,” Reid said. “For whatever reason, every child won’t have something on Christmas morning.”
Already, nearly 800 children have signed up to receive toys from Toys for Tots, and the organization is still taking applications, through Nov. 30.
Monetary and toy donations will be accepted through Dec. 18. Toys can be dropped off at any one of the Toys for Tots sponsor locations. They include:
