The Bearcats lost their final home game of the season with a crushing 55-0 loss Friday night against the Porter Ridge Pirates, bringing the Bearcats’ season record to 2-8.
Following their disappointing defeat at the Homecoming game Oct. 12, hopes were high for a win Friday but those hopes dwindled as the game went on: by the end of the first quarter, the Bearcats were already down 14-0. The game went downhill from there, with the Pirates gaining 7, 21, and 13 points in the next three quarters respectively, resulting in a final score of a devastating 55-0.
Manuel Alonso kicked off for the Bearcats to open the game. About eight minutes were left in the first quarter when the Pirates scored their first touchdown and received the extra point. The Bearcats held them off for the next several minutes until the Pirates scored a 22-yard rushing touchdown and scored the point after touchdown with one minute left in the quarter. Porter Ridge’s Matt Wogan made the PAT only following a series of penalty flags against the teams for offside against Bearcats (declined), a false start, and unsportsmanlike conduct that delayed the PAT.
The second quarter opened a little more strongly; although the Bearcats didn’t score, they were able to hold off the Pirates until the last three minutes of the quarter when the Pirates again scored a touchdown and gained the PAT.
Down 21-0, the disappointed Bearcats left the field and the Anson High School Band, together with the color guard, played its rendition of “Earth, Wind and Fire.” The singers were introduced along with their parents or guardians.
The third quarter opened as Porter Ridge kicked off to Anson; just minutes later, the Pirates scored another three yard rushing touchdown and PAT with 10:22 still left in the quarter. This set the trend for the rest of the game: the Pirates completed a 25 yard pass for a touchdown and kicked the PAT with eight minutes left in the quarter before scoring a 40 yard defensive touchdown and PAT with three minutes left.
The fourth quarter had barely started when the Pirates made a 25-yard rushing touchdown and PAT, bringing the score to 49-0 with 10 minutes left in the game. The final points of the game were made with the Pirates’ 22-yard rushing touchdown scored with three minutes left. The Bearcats’ only consolation was that the PAT was bad, making the final score 55-0.
The Bearcats will play their final game of the season on Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Parkwood in a 4A/3A Southern Carolina contest.
