When responding to a disturbance call on New Year’s Day, Lilesville police and Anson County Sheriff’s Deputies uncovered a meth lab operating near Lilesville Elementary School.

The Lilesville Police Department and Anson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call, regarding a fight on Fifth Street in Lilesville, Jan. 1 at around 1:30 p.m. When officers arrived at a residence at 313 Fifth St., they discovered drug paraphernalia inside the home.

Lilesville police obtained a narcotics search warrant for the residence, and uncovered a lab in which methamphetamines were being produced. Michelle Herndon, 49, and Michael Lawhorn Jr., 33, were arrested and taken to Anson County Jail. They are both charged with felony possession of precursor chemicals to produce methamphetamines and manufacturing methamphetamines.

More charges may be pending due to the home’s proximity to Lilesville Elementary School.

Lilesville Police Chief Bobby Gallimore said he appreciated the support of the Anson County Sheriff’s Office, Polkton Police Department, Lilesville Fire Department and the North Carolina SBI in making the arrests.
