Anson County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Firn announced Friday morning that he will resign his position as of Feb. 1.

The board appointed current Deputy Superintendent Michael Freeman interim superintendent during a special called meeting on Jan. 2.

“The timing of this is really based on my confidence in our leadership,” Dr. Firn said Friday morning. “Part of it is very sincerely that I wanted not to have a long period of time after the announcement so that it wouldn’t be a distraction.”

Firn said he couldn’t comment yet on his future plans, but said he will be staying in the education field, though it’s not clear whether or not he will remain in Anson County.

“This has everything to do with family,” he said of his reasons for stepping down. Firn, who took the superintendent job in July 2007, said he feels very proud of all the school system has accomplished during his tenure.

“I know there’s still work to be done here,” he said, “but I am leaving with the confidence that we will continue the good work we’ve been doing.”
