The Anson County Republican Party held a victory party on Nov. 13 to celebrate both their election efforts and Mark Brody’s win for N.C. House District 55, drawing several dozen people. Attendees mingled, listened to speeches and enjoyed snacks and a cake during the celebration.
Brody, who won at the Peachland and Burnsville precincts in Anson County, vowed to hold himself to his commitment to visit the county and talk with its inhabitants, including Democrats he hopes to win over. “I’ll be moving forward and spend some dedicated time in Anson County,” Brody said. “I’m looking forward to being part of the wonderful movement of Republicans. There are things that have been talked about for years that need to be done.”
Brody encouraged the attendees to call him with their concerns once he is in office, saying that, as he is from Union County, the input from those in Anson County would offer unique helpful insight.
Republican Party Chair Donna Wells thanked the crowd for their election efforts, delivering personal notes to many. “You give of yourselves,” Wells said. Her husband, Rev. Bob Wells, echoed the sentiment, adding that North Carolina is the only battleground state that President Barack Obama lost in this election, attributing that Republican victory to hardworking efforts, including those in Anson.
Bob Wells also recognized retired U.S. N.C. Col. Donnie B. Jordan, who is politically independent, for providing the building that serves as the first Republican headquarters in Anson County. Jordan rents the building for $1,000 a month but rented it to the GOP for $1 a month in addition to paying the water bill, leaving the GOP with only the $1 rent and the electric bill to pay, according to Bob Wells.
Elizabeth Edwards, the campaign manager for Gene McIntyre (R), attended the celebration in lieu of McIntyre. McIntyre, who ran for N.C. Senate District 25, was involved in a one-vehicle accident just days before the election and is currently resting. “Gene wanted me to thank all of you for him,” Edwards said. “The Anson County Republican Party is the hardest-working party in the district. You guys just fight.”
