Ellen Townsend
Ellen Denise Townsend, 43, died Nov. 15, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Funeral services were held Nov. 22 at noon at Smith's Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Carol Turner officiating. Interment followed the ceremony at Galilee AME Zion Church Cemetery in McFarlan.
Visitation was 30 minutes prior to the service.
She was born Oct. 22, 1965 in Anson county to the late Juanita Wall Townsend and Richard Townsend.
She graduated in 1985 from Bowman High School. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Cairo.
She is survived by her daughters, Shemika Townsend of the home and Brittany Spencer of Morven; two grandchildren; a special father, Henry Frank Cason of Morven; a sister, Juanita Townsend of Morven; two brothers, Evanzel (Kathy) Wall of Wadesboro and Tony Townsend of Philadelphia, Pa.; mother-in-law, Mary (Harlie) Lee Gaddy of Morven; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Frances Hart
BURLINGTON
Frances Hedrick Hart died Nov. 26, 2008 at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell.
A memorial service was held Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Burlington with the Rev. Terry Peele officiating. The family received friends from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
Interment was held at Alamance Memorial Park.
She was preceded in death by her parents, N.S. and Florence Surratt Hedrick of Lilesville, NC; brothers Baxter and Bill Hedrick of Lilesville and sisters, Miss Gurtha Hedrick of Lilesville, Mrs. Raymond Ballard (Aline) of Windsor, NC and Mrs. W.E. Hege (Julia) of Lexington and Thomasville.
By her side until her peaceful departure to heaven were her husband, James "Jim" Hart of the home; son, James (Libby) Hart, Jr., of Pittsboro; and daughter Janese (Elman) Frantz, of Chapel Hill.
There are also six surviving grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
She taught kindergarten, Sunday school and Bible school. She also directed dance schools in Wadesboro, Graham, Mebane and Kingston, Tenn.

Warren Smith
WADESBORO
Warren Gerold Smith Sr., 87, died Dec. 4, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center-Union.
Funeral services were held Dec. 6 at Leavitt Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Hunter officiating. The family greeted friends at the funeral home at 10 a.m.
Interment followed at 4 p.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery in Morganton.
A native of Morganton, he was born March 21, 1921 to the late C. Kelly and Sallie Suttle Smith.
Smith was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in the China-Burma-India theatre. He was educated in the Morganton City Schools, graduated from Gardner-Webb Jr. College and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Western Carolina University, majoring in Elementary Education.
He began his 34 year career in 1952 as principal and teacher at South Roberson School in Fairmont and came to Anson County in 1959 where he served in positions of supervisor, interim superintendent and the director of ESEA & Chapter I programs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Baraca Sunday School class.
He was preceded in death by a brother, W. Harold Smith of Morganton; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Nichole Walker.
Smith is survived by his wife Doris Conley Smith, whom he married June 14, 1947; his son, Warren (Debbie) G. “Jerry” Smith of Jacksonville, Fl.; his daughter, Janis (Russell) S. Sikes of Wadesboro; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nell S. Dale, of Morganton.

Charles E. Holmes, 78, died Nov. 12, 2008 at Monroe Nursing & Rehabilitation.
Funeral services were held Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. at New Home Baptist Church. Visitation was one hour prior to the service.
Interment was at Fountain Hill Methodist Church Cemetery.
He was born Oct. 3, 1934 in Anson county to the late Chappy Bose Holmes and Alma Jean Hill Holmes. He was a retired farmer and cattle salesman.
He is survived by a son, Charles E. Holmes of Stanfield; a brother, Haywood L. Holmes of Marshville; a sister, Linda Lewis, of Peachland; and three grandchildren.
Ollie Clark

Ollie Vastie Clark, 84, died Nov. 27, 2008 at Woodridge Assisted Living Center in Monroe.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Nov. 29 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home. Interment followed at Lilesville Cemetery.

Clark was born in Anson county Dec. 30, 1923, a daughter of the late George Bunyan and Ollie Teal Melton. She retired from Wade Manufacturing.
She is survived by her children, the Rev. Roger (Linda) Clark of Lexington, S.C., Paulette Poole of Monroe, the Rev. Darrell (Laurie) Clark of El Paso, Texas, Dwayne Clark of Monroe; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; her brother and sister, Major Melton of Lumberton and Paige Hogan of Lilesville.

Eulalah Shaver, 83, died Dec. 6, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center Union in Monroe.

She was a devoted member of Wadesboro Church of God.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Ruby Shaver of Zachary, La.; four nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Joe Thomas Moore, 74, died Dec. 5, 2008.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Dec. 8, 2008 at Anson Memorial Park, with the Rev. Jerry Hatcher officiating. The family greeted friends Sunday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home.
He was born in Anson county June 27, 1934 to the late James Preston and Alma Baker Moore.
He was a retired truck driver and member of Westside Baptist Church in Cheraw, S.C.
He served nine years in the Air National Guard Reserves 263rd squad. He was a member of the Cheraw Masonic Lodge No. 15.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Rachel Williamson Moore.
He is survived by his son, Joe (Gwen) Thomas “Joey” Moore, II of New London; two grandchildren; and his brother, Robert (Glenda) Moore of Aquadale.

Trula Huneycutt Hall, 92, died Dec. 3, 2008, while a resident at Lake Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
A service to celebrate her life was held at 11 a.m. Dec. 6 at Mercy House Church of God in Monroe with the Rev. Alan Greene, the Rev. Bob Gilley and the Rev. Ken Hensley officiating.
Interment followed at Lakeland Memorial Park.
The family greeted friends Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the church and also on Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
She was born Aug. 20, 1916 in Stanly county, one of eleven children born to Rufus E. and Ellen Bowers Huneycutt.
She and her late husband, the Rev. H. W. “Doc” Hall were ministers in the Church of God for more than 65 years, having last served the Monroe Church of God for 30 years, prior to retirement. They were very instrumental in the organization of the Church of God in Norwood, Oakboro, Mt. Pleasant, China Grove, Rockwell and Troy.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Phoebah (James) Hall Joyner of Monroe and Wanda (Howard) Hall Helms of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and brothers and sister, Melvin and Bob Huneycutt and Irene Whitley, all of Albemarle.
The family would like to express their heart felt gratitude to the staff at Lake Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care and concern while she was a resident there.

John Henry "Johnny" Sturdivant, 70, of Ansonville, died Dec. 3, 2008 at Levine Dickson Hospice Home.
Funeral services was held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 9, 2008 at Ansonville First Baptist Church with the Rev. R.E. Blount officiating. Burial followed at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Family visitation was a half-hour prior to the service. Public viewing was at Harris Funeral Home in Mt. Gilead, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 8.
He was a native of Anson county and attended Fayetteville State University.
He is survived by his sons, Johnny "Ervin" Sturdivant of Ansonville and Henry "Pernell" Sturdivant of Charlotte; daughters, Amy Holloway of Lithonia, Ga.; Nancy Evans of Charlotte and Sabrina Lilly of Ansonville; parents, the Rev. W.H. and Ornie Sturdivant of the home; sister, Dr. Willie S. Clark of Wadesboro; brother, Carl Sturdivant of Charlotte; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Athel Hamilton Holmes, 88, died Dec. 7, 2008 at CMC-Union in Monroe.
Funeral services will be held Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Morgan & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Fountain Hill UMC Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
She was born Sept. 12, 1920 in Union county to the late Ray and Mary Strawn Hamilton.
She is survived by her husband, Hayward, of the home; son, Larry Lee Holmes of New Salem; daughter, Wanda H. Carpenter of Marshville; brother, Reece Hamilton of Marshville; sister, Jewell Thomas of Asheville; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Fannie Ruth Jackson Thomas, 66, died Nov. 30, 2008.
Funeral services were held Dec. 6, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Burnsville with the Rev. Deon McBride and Bishop Walter Ellerbe officiating. Interment was at Poplar Springs Cemetery.
She was born June 1, 1942 to the late Booker and Pauline Jackson in Anson county.
She was employed by the Union county jail and was a faithful member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
She attended Ansonville School.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Reddick, Charles and Andy Thomas; two grandchildren, Tratez Colston and April Thomas; three brothers, Walter L., Tylar and Alonzo Jackson; and a sister, Betty Lee.
She is survived by her husband, David Thomas; two daughters, Debbie and Teresa Thomas of Wadesboro; two sons, Marcel (Pam) Thomas and Bruce Thomas of Wadesboro; twelve grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchilren; a sister, Minnie (Willie) Barnes of Wadesboro; a brother, Leroy Jackson of Burnsville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lillie Mae Cook McLendon, 73, died Nov. 24, 2008 at her home.
Funeral services were held Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. at Carolina Biblical Gardens in Jamestown with pastor Robert Hough officiating.
She was born May 1, 1935 to the late Lee and Beulah Cook of Rowan county.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Giles McLendon. They had three children, Michael, Lura and Heather.
She is survived by her children, Michael, Lura and Heather McLendon, all of the home; six sisters, Jean Cook, Shirley Griffin, Josephine Hayes, Linda Hodnett, Barbara Evans and Frances Cook; three brothers, Willie Cook, Leon Cook and Walter Lee Cook; sisters-in-law, Mary Lee McLendon, Ruby McLendon, Mattie McLendon and Hattie Dunlap; two brothers-in-law, Charles Simon and Otis Sellers; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Teuntra Cook
FORT BRAGG
Sgt. Teuntra Shanta Nero Cook, 27, died Nov. 14 at Anson Community Hospital in Wadesboro.
Funeral services were held Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Fort Worth, Texas. Burial was at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas.
She was born March 16, 1981 in Fort Worth, Texas to Shelia Nero and Kenneth Davis.
She was wed to Sgt. Antonio Cook, who is also stationed at Fort Bragg. The couple had a son and a daughter.
She returned in June from Iraq.
She is survived by her husband, Sgt. Antonio Hood of Fort Bragg; her son, Jadlin Nero of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, DeZigna Cook; two sisters; grandparent, Pauline Reed of Fort Worth, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
