The Anson County Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting Nov. 19. No public comments were given, so immediately after going into open session the board awarded four students awards for winning a Christmas card contest: Holly Yang, Anson Early College; Theresa Sommerville, Wadesboro Elementary; Maci Lane Sellers, Wadesboro Primary; and Tracey Brewer, Anson Early College were all recognized.
During chair reports, board member Lisa Davis told the board that she attended career day at Peachland-Polkton Elementary School and the North Carolina School Board’s associational meeting as a delegate and that it “was extremely important to be in that meeting and see how things are done.” Echoing another board member, she said that it was “very well organized at Peachland,” and that she had the opportunity to speak to two kindergarten classes.
Davis also asked the board to form an ad-hoc committee to discuss opportunities with community leaders. The board approved Davis’ request.
The board also recognized two members who are leaving following the November election results, Daniel Wilson and Michael Livingston. Both men were commended for their “dedication and service to the children of Anson County.”
Superintendent Dr. Greg Firn presented his report to the board, apprising them various business. He told the board that though copper thieves had stolen only about $2,500 worth in copper, they left the school with a bill of over $180,000, most or all of which he hopes will be covered by insurance. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning units both inside and outside are being replaced after the robbery, as are several computer servers due to the abrupt power outage the thieves caused when they cut the power to steal the copper.
The early release schedules pertaining to the Dec. 6 Wadesboro Christmas parade and Christmas break will be released this week or next week, according to Firn.
Board members were provided information on the Cooperative Innovative High School grant proposal for Anson STEM Middle College, for which the administration recommended approval.
The Board of Education will next meet at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 17 at the Charles Riddle Staff Development Center, 320 Camden Road, Wadesboro. Closed session will begin at 5:30 p.m. A community forum will be held on Jan. 15, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. at the South Piedmont Community College Lockhart-Taylor Center in the Ingram Room.
