James Lynn Thomas, known as Lynn, of Polkton was killed in a one-vehicle accident in Ansonville on Monday morning.
Officer B.K. Ratliff with the N.C. Highway Patrol said the accident occurred on Plank Road near Fries Boulevard. Thomas, driving a 2005 Chevrolet pick-up truck, was traveling north on Plank Road when he ran off the road to the right and the vehicle struck a tree.
Thomas was killed instantly. “There was no contributing factor for him,” Ratliff said. “He wasn’t speeding or anything. We won’t know the cause until we get the medical examiner’s report. We think it was a medical issue but can’t say for sure. He just for some reason went to the right off the road.”
Thomas was 63 and was described by Ratliff as “a well known, and well-liked member of the community.”
Thomas was a farmer and enjoyed hunting and horseback riding. He was a substitute carrier at Polkton Post Office before founding Lynn Thomas Grading, where most of his employees were family members.
“Always known to be a good cook, he would be the first one at the Rocky River brotherhood breakfasts, where he was known for his delicious grits,” his full obituary read. “He faithfully helped Fran cater, where his specialty was shrimp and grits. As a member of The Cattleman’s Association, he cooked regularly at the meetings once they discovered his talents.”
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Fran Turner Thomas, two sons and four grandchildren.
