A Lilesville man was killed in a wreck Sunday, July 19.

The wreck occurred at roughly 4 p.m. at the intersection of N.C. 1740 and U.S. 74, First Sgt. M.R. Leach of the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Paul Edwards Spencer, 54, died when his vehicle crossed U.S. 74 and was hit on the passenger side by a 2002 Jeep sport utility vehicle driven by James Lester Butler of Laurinburg.

"A witness said [Spencer's] car didn't yield at that stop sign, it just went straight across," he said. Alcohol may have been a factor but officials would not be sure until the toxicology reports were complete.

Spencer's vehicle rolled three times and landed on its side after the collision.

Spencer was alone and Butler had two passengers. Butler and his passengers were taken to Anson Community Hospital.

Their injuries did not appear to be life threatening, Leach said Tuesday.
