Congressman Larry Kissell announced recently that $56,345,356 from the Justice Assistance Grant will be coming to North Carolina, including $25,381 for Anson County and $27,449 for the Wadesboro Police Department. That adds up to a total of $52,830 for the county altogether.
"The funds are meant to assist in all things justice-related, including law enforcement, crime prevention and safety education programs," according to a press release issued by Kissell's office.
Sheriff Tommy Allen Jr. said he was unsure yet what exactly his office would spend the funding on, but added, "I'm sure we can use it though."
He said he was notified by telephone last week, and would have to wait and see what restrictions will be placed on the funding before deciding how it will be spent.
Wadesboro Police Chief Janie Schutz was working on finalizing her department's application for the funds on Monday. She said it was "a good possibility" that the department's share of the funding will go toward safety equipment, which includes not only firearms and other safety devices, but also the police force's vehicles.
"The safety of our communities must always be a priority," Kissell said in the press release. "The folks who work in local justice deserve every available dollar to help them protect and secure the citizens of Anson County."
