The Anson High School girl’s varsity basketball team played Richmond at home on Wednesday, winning with a decisive score of 50-26.
The Lady Cats finished the first quarter with a heartening 23-8 score, breezing through the second quarter, 33-14. By the end of the third quarter the girls were ahead 42-14, giving them a great lead for their fantastic 50-26 finish.
The men’s varsity game left a lot more doubt as to whom the victor would be. Anson and Richmond struggled for every point gained, with the score inching up steadily. By halftime the Bearcats were behind, 33-41. The excitement — and decibel — levels rose as each point was celebrated. By the end of the third quarter Anson was down 47-60, but the men fought hard, bringing the score within six points of Richmond’s part way through the fourth quarter. Although Anson continued to score, Richmond shot ahead at the end, finishing the game in a disappointing 73-83 victory for Richmond.
Both the men’s and women’s varsity and JV teams will play next at home versus Parkwood on Jan. 11 with the first game beginning at 4 p.m.
