Gov. Bev Perdue has joined President Barack Obama by ordering U.S. and North Carolina flags lowered on state facilities in tribute to victims of the tragic mass shooting in Connecticut. Citizens are urged to follow this order as well.
In a proclamation released by the White House, the President said:
“As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, December 18, 2012.”
Governor Perdue said:
“Our thoughts and hearts are with the families of the victims of this senseless act of violence in Newtown, Conn. Bob and I are deeply shocked and heartbroken over this tragic loss of life. Our prayers are with all the families of the children, teachers and administrators.”
Flags shall be flown at half-staff until sunset, Dec. 18.
