Five men were arrested Oct. 16 after sheriff's deputies seized a meth lab on Lower White Store Road, south of Peachland.

Sheriff Tommy Allen said in a written statement the lab, in a trailer, was in the process of creating a gallon of liquid methamphetamine. The raid occurred at 8:45 a.m.

The SBI and a HAZMAT team were called in to disassemble the lab and dispose of the chemicals that were being used.

"This was one of the few actually operating labs we have run across," Allen said. "This lab was making meth when we arrived and it was a very dangerous situation for the officers involved."

Allen said meth producers do not care about the danger the operation exposes themselves or others to, and have a total disregard for the safety of others.

Three deputies were treated and released from Anson Community Hospital after coming into contact with the fumes from the lab.

Tammius Edward Smith, 41, and Terra Ann Smith, 24, both of Peachland, and Don Franklin Teal, 35, Michael Stephen Knotts, 28, and Daniel Joe Furr, 26, all of Wadesboro, were arrested.

All of them were charged with various counts of possession of methamphetamine, manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine precursors and maintaining a dwelling to manufacture methamphetamine. Teal was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.

All five suspects were placed in the Anson County Jail under a $350,000 bond. Their court date is Nov. 23.
