Following a crushing 56-6 loss against Scotland Sept. 14, the Bearcats were ready for another victory like the one they’d scored the week before against Chesterfield.

The 20-20 tie at Friday night’s football game against East Columbus was broken by Louquasious Moses with a touchdown in the last 15 seconds of the game. Manuel Alonso got the extra point, bringing the score to 27-20 and the team’s season record to 2-4.

It was a tight game— Anson and East Columbus were 0-6 in the first quarter, 7-6 in the second, 13-20 in the third and finally ended 27-20.

After the brilliant halftime show by the Anson High School Marching Band, color guard and the Anson Middle School 8th Grade Band, the second half started with a disappointing play from Rodrick Evans, who delivered the kickoff for Anson, but sent the ball out of bounds. In the third quarter, Jekev Robinson scored a touchdown and Alonso scored the extra point, bringing the score to 14-20.

Before the win, the game had been tied since a touchdown by Bunyon Tyson and an extra point in the fourth quarter, giving the Bearcats hope with the 20-20 tie.

Moses broke the tie with the touchdown and Alonso’s extra point boosted the score— and the team and crowd’s spirits as Anson prepares to play Sun Valley in Monroe on Friday.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: In last week’s recap of the football game, “Bearcats crushed at home, 56-6,” the scorer of Anson’s lone touchdown was misidentified. Quarterback Rodrick Evans threw the pass to Vernice Rorie, who made the touchdown — Anson’s only six points of the game. We apologize for the error.)
