Local Anson County natives Jillyan Murray and Lativa Lee helped Catawba Valley Community College reach a No. 4 ranking in basketball this season. Catawba played No. 8 Louisburg College on Saturday, winning against Louisburg 78-75. Murray was one of Catawba’s leaders.
By halftime, Catawba’s Lady Buccaneers held a close one-point lead over the Lady Hurricanes with a score of 40-39. “Catawba Valley’s 40-39 halftime lead was thanks to a half court shot by Matrice Sweezy at the horn,” assistant coach Jason Fulbright said via email. “With the win Catawba Valley CC is outright regular season Conference Champions. and will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s conference tournament with the winner of the tournament advancing to East Peoria, Ill., for the NJCAA Division II National Championship. [Head coach] Tommy Edwards, is very proud of the way his players played and worked hard to make this a special season, he hopes the success carries over into the tournament.”
Murray contributed five field goals, two three-pointers and two offensive rebounds. She scored 14 total points and an assist. Lee scored two field goals and six rebounds, including one offensive and one defensive. She scored four total points.
Anson High School women’s basketball coach Deloris Covington congratulated Lee, Murray and the rest of the Catawba team. “The CVCC Lady Bucs have had one of the best season within girls basketball,” she said via email. “Congratulations to Lativa and Jill for staying focused in the classroom and on the basketball court. Catawba’s coach Tommy Edwards and Asst. Coach Tisha England states (sic) that their program focus more so on academics from the time of enrollment until graduation, meaning that they will not face the challenges of anyone being dismissed from their basketball team for academics, and this was not a problem for the Lady Bucs! The Lady Bucs ended up 28-0 for the 2012-2013 regular season and 14-0 in the conference. They now head into tournament play. Good luck, Lady Bucs!”
The Lady Buccaneers will play at 3 p.m. on Friday against Guilford Tech Community College in the quarterfinals of Region 10 conference tournament. The tournament will run from March 8-10 at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, Va.
