February was National Sweet Potato Month, which was the perfect opportunity for connecting the cafeteria to the classroom at Ansonville Elementary School. AES students and staff showed their love for sweet potatoes with a variety of educational and promotional activities.
Here are just a few of the ways that this nutritious vegetable was celebrated.
- Morning announcements included sweet potato history, nutrition facts and trivia.
- Posters and an information area showed students how a sweet potato gets from a farmer’s field to your plate, including growing, harvesting and cooking. Several menu choices in the cafeteria included whipped sweet potatoes with marshmallows, baked sweet potatoes and spaghetti with sweet potato sauce.
- A sweet potato decorating contest was held. Sweet potatoes were creatively designed as a mouse, snail and even a farm yard scene complete with a cow, chicken and water trough. Students and teachers imaginations soared!
