Retired dentist George Puryear was honored at the county commissioners meeting on May 5.

Retired dentist George Puryear was honored by the Anson County Board of Commissioners at the regular monthly meeting on May 5.

Dr. Puryear has been practicing dentistry in Anson County since June 1973. He moved into his present location on Moore’s Lake Road in 1983.

In honoring Dr. Puryear, the commissioners unanimously passed a resolution, which stated his many accomplishments, including his service in the Anson County Chamber of Commerce, Wadesboro Civitan Club, Anson County Historical Society, Anson County Arts Council, Anson County Board of Health, Anson Technical College board of trustees, and the former Anson Community Hospital (now Carolinas HealthCare System — Anson). He also volunteered each year to provide free cleanings for Anson County schoolchildren.

Dr. Puryear thanked the commissioners for the honor, and added that he owed much of his success to his wife, Becky, who was recently confined to a wheelchair due to illness. Her health is part of the reason Dr. Puryear said he decided to retire at this time.

“I would like to share this honor with my wife, Becky,” he said. “I will be home to take care of her now, after all the years she’s taken care of me.”
