Every parent wants their child to have a great future. However, we as parents don’t always give them the important guidance they need to build success. Every person that has achieved any level of success will tell you that you must be present to win. Although we have wonderful parents and great children, we have too many children absent or tardy for school every day. Too many children are consistently late, absent from school or leaving early and often with parent knowledge and approval. This behavior has to stop!
When children arrive late, they miss out on essential instructions given at the beginning of a lesson. This significantly reduces achievement, regardless of academic ability. Children may also feel awkward arriving to the classroom when everyone else is settled. They may exhibit negative behaviors to hide their awkwardness, which further disrupts the class and the teacher. Everyone’s education is compromised.
High school students, just one step away from college or a career, are no exception. In fact, they are worse. Many developed the behavior in primary school, arriving after school starts and leaving before it ends. Parents who are signing their high school children out early just because the student is bored or doesn’t like a class are not doing their child any favors. These students may never make the positive changes in their attendance habits to increase their academic and personal success. This behavior follows children into their adult lives and many never reach their full potential.
Parents have a duty and responsibility to ensure their child’s regular attendance at school, arrival before school starts, and staying at school until the end of the school day. School administrators and teachers are happy to work with parents in difficult situations and are here to assist parents in helping their children achieve their dreams. But students must come from home prepared to learn.
