Eddie Clyde Helms, 61, of Marshville was arrested Tuesday morning for the November 1988 murder of John T. Griffin III in Peachland, as well as a 2012 murder in Union County.

Griffin was shot to death while installing a TV antenna on his roof on Nov. 10, 1988, Sheriff Tommy Allen said. While he was on the roof, Griffin was ambushed, shot with a .12-gauge shotgun, fell off the house and died at the scene.

Helms was also charged Tuesday morning in the 2012 Union County murder of Charles Ronald Godwin. Sheriff Allen said that the murder in Marshville was somewhat similar in that the victim was ambushed in a secret assault, and shot with a .12 gauge shotgun as well. The arrest was the result of a lengthy investigation by the Union County Sheriff's Office, the State Bureau of Investigation and the Anson County Sheriff's Office.

Helms was arrested by Union County Deputies and SBI at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at his home in Marshville, and was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

“I can't go into a lot of detail but to say the investigation into the Marshville murder led back to the old Anson County murder in Peachland,” Sheriff Allen said. “In 1988 Anson County had 10 murders, including a number of drug-related murders and murder for hire. All were solved but the Griffin murder, where officers ran into dead ends at that time. Murder cases are never closed and there is no statute of limitations on murder.”

Helms is being held in the Union County Jail without bond pending a court date of Sept. 22 for the Anson County charge, and Sept. 30 for the Union County offenses. Charges in both counties may carry the death penalty, the sheriff said.
