Lanesboro Correctional Institution in Polkton is still on lockdown, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety.

The prison has been on lockdown since an inmate attacked an officer on Nov. 15 using an improvised weapon. A subsequent search of the prison led to the discovery of contraband items such as weapons, cell phones, and marijuana.

Gradually, a few privileges have been reinstated. In late December, Keith Acree, the communications officer over adult correction with DPS, said that prisoners were allowed to purchase items from the canteen again; however, he could not confirm whether allegations from inmates’ relatives that prisoners were handcuffed in the showers was true. This was one of several complaints from multiple inmates and their relatives.

The lockdown may be lifted soon, according to Pamela Walker, the DPS communications director. “As of [Monday,] the close custody section is still on lockdown, but they are allowing visitation and canteen privileges,” she said. “We are hopeful to resume normal operations soon, but I do not have an exact date on when that will happen.”

Currently, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting a probe into Lanesboro but has not yet announced any results. The probe was triggered by the stabbing murder of inmate Wesley Turner by another inmate in September 2012.

Lanesboro, a high-security prison facility, is adjacent to Brown Creek Correctional Institution and Anson Correctional Center in Polkton.
