Ten children were treated to Shop With a Cop on Friday.

The children, aged 4-11, met with officers at the Wadesboro Police Department before heading to McDonald’s, where the restaurant provided all of the children with a free lunch. From there the group went to Walmart, where each child was assigned to a police officer and a Walmart associate who accompanied them on their shopping trip.

Town Manager Alex Sewell, Councilman James David Lee, and Mayor Bill Thacker and his wife also met with the children at Walmart to shop with them. Each child was given $200 to spend on whatever they wanted. Many picked up school uniforms, socks, belts, shoes and other practical items in addition to toys. After they purchased their items, Woodforest National Bank provided each child with a goody bag.

Police Chief Thedis Spencer said he was pleased with the event, which provided each child with more money than last year’s Shop With a Cop. “We did better this year,” he said. “McDonald’s wanted to be a part of it this year and are furnishing the kids’ meals for free, so we’re more than happy.”

The money was raised by the police department throughout the year. Officer Joshua Leviner organized a 5K/8K run that raised over $1,300, and money was also raised through a bike ride, a show at Northcutt’s Affordables Gallery, and through donations from community members.
