Darrell Day spoke to local Republicans Jan. 12 about his platform as he campaigns for the Republican nomination to run against Representative Larry Kissell.
Republican candidates hoping to replace Representative Larry Kissell spoke to local Republicans Jan. 12 at the Hampton B. Allen Library.

Darrell Day and Hal Jordan gave brief speeches about their platforms and attacked Democrats in Washington.

Jordan lives between Matthews and Charlotte and works for IBM.

"I believe we need to be conservative in every sense," he said.

He attacked Democrats for spending too much money.

"The interest alone will eat you alive" if the spending continued, he said,.

He expressed his opposition to gay marriage and hopes to see Roe vs. Wade overturned.

Anson County Republican Chairwoman Donna Wells asked him to elaborate on his positions regarding U.S. support for Israel and the abortion issue.

"I am a strong supporter of Israel," he said, adding the nation has made mistakes but they were understandable.

"Abortion is unfortunately our own form of the Holocaust," he said. "I could never support abortion on demand."

The other candidate, Darrell Day, lives in Scotland County and is the owner of East Coast Umbrella Inc.

Day spent much of his speech discussing how he became a Christian and how it would later help him cope with his kidneys failing. He would require dialysis but claims God healed him and he has not needed the treatment in nine months.

"America can be healed by God too," he said.

He spent the rest of his time discussing what he thought should be done to create jobs in America.

"In our time, we have seen the de-industrialization of America," he said.

Some of the steps he would take to create jobs would be to cut corporate taxes and audit the Federal Reserve.

Jason Phibbs, a native of Stanly County, came to speak briefly about his campaign for the state Senate chair currently held by Senator William Purcell.

"You're not being represented in the North Carolina Senate," he said. "We've got to defend the family."

Phibbs is the chair of Stanly County's chapter of NC4Marriage, which advocates that marriage should only be allowed between one man and one woman. Toward that end, they have worked to amend the N.C. Constitution

He was a key figure in spurring recent attempts to earn a resolution of support for these goals by county commissioners at recent meetings. Phibbs spoke in August to Anson Republicans about how he succeeded in lobbying for a resolution from the Stanly County Commission.

Other candidates for office present at the meeting included John Barker, who will run against Representative Pryor Gibson for his seat in the N.C. General Assembly, Rick Wallace, who will run against Sheriff Tommy Allen, and Wanda Hildreth, who plans to run for the local school board.
