The Wadesboro Town Council held a special meeting on Monday evening to discuss a budget amendment and to hear a presentation on a needs assessment for town properties.
A representative for Solutions for Local Government, Inc., presented several plans that showed how a new police department, fire department and town hall could be squeezed onto the town’s property. Space-wise, the ideal plan was to house only the WPD and WFD on the same property to allow for ample parking. This left no space for the town hall, though plans showing all three together cut off parking spaces.
These were early diagrams and will be revised based on council feedback. Ideally, the new town hall would include a large council meeting room and meeting room foyer, a conference room, several offices, public and staff restrooms, and more. Based on talks with the town and fire department, the fire department would hopefully include a large vehicle bay, offices, a meeting and training room, a kitchen and dining area, a decontamination shower and more. The police department would ideally have several offices, interview rooms, large evidence processing and storage areas, a kitchen/break area and other rooms.
The council did not take any action, but learned about their options and suggested feedback for the concepts. Revised plans will be presented later.
Before discussing a budget amendment, the council went into closed session for real property. No action was announced after members returned to open session.
The council voted to approve a budget amendment for $8,550 to purchase security upgrades for the Wadesboro Police Department computer systems. The council’s next meeting will be on April 8, just the day before Microsoft will halt security updates for Windows XP and Office 2003, so rather than wait for the software to become outdated and pose a security hazard, the council voted to update the IT systems.
The council will hold its regular monthly meeting on April 7 at 5 p.m. at the town hall.
