SPCC to host N.C. Poet Laureate

February 14, 2014

MONROE and WADESBORO — South Piedmont Community College will host North Carolina Poet Laureate Dr. Joseph Bathanti for two evening events next week. “A conversation with Joseph Bathanti” will be held Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 17 and 18). Both events begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

On Monday night, Bathanti will speak at SPCC’s Old Charlotte Highway campus at 4209 Old Charlotte Hwy., Monroe. On Tuesday he will be at the college’s Lockhart-Taylor Center at 514 N. Washington St., Wadesboro.

Bathanti, who served as a visiting artist at Anson Community College, a predecessor to SPCC, in the early 1990s, is returning to share his reflections on his time in Anson and Union counties.

In addition to his poetry, Bathanti is a novelist and professor of creative writing at Appalachian State University. Bathanti also chronicled the history of artists, bringing their disciplines to rural areas in his book “They Changed the State: The Legacy of North Carolina’s Visiting Artists, 1971-95.”

While Bathanti’s presentations are free of charge, donations to the SPCC foundation will be accepted through Charitable Giving, the foundation that provides student scholarships and funding for a variety of college programs. Courtesy RSVPs for either event may be sent to Hayne White at
