More than 60 people hit the chilly, windy streets of uptown Wadesboro Sunday afternoon for the first-ever Shop with a Cop Run. The event raised more than $1,300 for the Shop with a Cop program, which allows Wadesboro police officers to take needy kids shopping for clothing, toys and other gifts just before Christmas.

In addition to the 5K and 8K races, the Anson County Arts Council provided ornament and stocking decorating for the kids on hand, and Forever & Always Photography provided free digital photos with Santa Claus. Some of the kids also did a 1K walk up North Greene Street with their parents after the run was completed.

The top finisher was Steven Jones of Polkton, who finished the 5K with a time of 26:41. Jones said he was surprised to finish first , although he does run a couple of times a week.

The first female finisher was April Roberts, with a time of 30:03. Charles Williamson was the second overall finisher, with a time of 27:57. Top finishers in the 8K race were: Joshua Guara, Billy Jacobs and Gwen Lanning. All of the top finishers received trophies or holiday wreaths.

Leviner said the event wouldn’t have been a success without the help of its sponsors, including Poisson, Poisson & Bower. South Piedmont Community College donated water, and Food Lion donated bananas for the runners.

People from all over the region participated in the run, coming from Anson County, Rockingham, Charlotte, Albemarle and South Carolina, Leviner said.
